Our Pack, Inc. began with
advocating for pit bulls in 2006. We worked on cases like the Michael
Vick case, taking a dog named Leo from that case who became a therapy
dog and changed many people’s minds about pit bulls.

When we
started our rescue and advocacy programs, there were so many
misunderstandings, not only surrounding pit bull type dogs, but
surrounding dogs in general. Much has changed for pit bull dogs since
then, fortunately.

Although manifested differently, we’re finding
similar threads of misunderstandings with bunnies. Their diets, housing
(most pet stores will advise you to buy cages that are far too small)
and what their behaviors mean. Also, many people don’t realize what
sensitive and feeling beings bunnies are.

Dogs and cats have much more advocacy then they've had in the past. Not that they don't still need it but they have much more than rabbits do.

Education as well as
spay/neuter services can lower the numbers of surrenders to shelters and
over population of dogs and cats. We believe that providing similar
public assistance to bunny owners will slow the amount of bunnies being
surrendered to shelters and from being abandoned on the streets.

There
are people that have come to us needing help with a bunny they’ve
found, we’ve given hay if they need it and advice on bunny care. We have
also given assistance by providing help with spay/neuter.

Bunnies
are loving, feeling animals that need love, care, and happy homes to
live in. We’re here to help new or current bunny people in any way that
we can to facilitate the life-long bond between bunny and human.

If you’d like to donate please go to www.ourpack.org/donate.html

Marthina McClay, CPDT-KA

We have had the good fortune of great media surrounding our dogs in recent
years. Most reputable reporters will check quotes with us for accuracy and have
no intention of throwing pit bulls under the bus or any other breeds, to
"defend" pit bulls, under the bus either.

However, once in a blue moon, unfortunately, we still see reporters trying
to make a career for themselves or help sell their paper by misquoting or
twisting statements to turn the pit bull image into something it isn't.

This is a photo of Posie. She's our spokesdog for our, Don't Judge, Learn
campaign. She looks like what most folks would call a pit bull. Without meeting
her, knowing her or taking in a full view of her personality, many things can be
said to defame her and a breed that she may, or may not, even
be... Well, without media hype she is a dog and family member.

Thank you for supporting our page so we can continue to represent
the dogs, factually, without being misquoted, and with correct representation.
Please share!

Training tip:
Getting lots of calls and e mails about this lately -Puppy play biting.
Puppy biting is normal. Puppies in their early months should bite when they are young, to learn how to bite softly as an adult. They also learn proper s...

ocial skills from each other by play biting and wrestling.
A yelp will let the pup know that a bite hurts. This is what pups do with each other to signal the one biting to soften his bite. To be able to keep playing, he will soften his bite. Thus he learns that if his mouth is soft, fun continues and if his mouth is hard then the game ends.
If your pup is play biting and bites too hard, give a yelp. If that doesn’t work then give a louder Ouuuch! and just leave the room. End all play at that time for several seconds then return.
After teaching him to soften the bite, teach him not to exert any pressure at all while biting. This way he will use only a gentle mouth as an adult. Be sure to have lots of chew toys available and direct him to the chew toys as well when needed.

If you are concerned or feel that you need more assistance the best thing to do is to hire a trainer to come and help you or enroll in a class near you. Getting advice over the internet for concerning behavior is not the best way to help your dog. Trainers are far more helpful when they can actually see the dog. This training tip is a general tip for young pups with normal play biting behavior. If you feel you need assistance, hire a trainer from this list in your zip code: www.apdt.com

Socializing Our Dogs --
http://www.ourpack.org/socializing.html
I hear the phrase, "it's all in how you raise them" quite a bit. Well, in our experience, we've taken dogs from all sorts of abuse cases such as fighting cases, neglect cases..., etc. But outside of rescue, I'm a trainer by trade and I see all breeds and types of dogs. I've seen dogs grow up in perfect environments that can still have issues. I'm not saying that environment is not important, I want to be clear on that. BUT to say that a dog has to have issues becuase he/she was abused only puts him in a box that can be hard to get out of. Some dogs come out of tough cases just fine and some dogs have issues with a perfect environment. That just tells us that they should be assessed as an individual, based on what they are NOW. Having said this, I'm posting tips on socializing our dogs in positive situations.. It is important to socialize, train and manage throughout a dog's life. However, while at times history is certainly important to take in, in many cases it may be a moot point. Look at him for who/what he is and not what was.
Our Packhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15866351499622774333noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337563478508563426.post-35812955999550568302012-04-12T15:37:00.002-07:002012-04-12T15:38:19.487-07:00Dexter's Good Dog Recipe

Recipe directions- Take 1 or more dogs, socialize in large amounts. Train to taste. Spay/neuter. Contain, add love, stir in some leadership and top with management. Note: mixture can vary in composition even w...hen using the recipe properly. That's normal. Enjoy! - All dogs are individuals. They respond to training, socializing and the environment differently. We've taken in some dogs from abuse cases that slid right back into life with no problems. Some had a more difficult time. Some dogs that have perfect homes, can also have issues, so this is variable. However, as responsible humans, it's best to set our dogs up for success as much as possible and as early as possible.
Our Packhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15866351499622774333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337563478508563426.post-77257849100957396422012-02-16T21:16:00.000-08:002012-02-16T21:17:21.680-08:00Justice for BernieBernie came to Our Pack from a dogfighting case in Ohio. Our devoted volunteer and trainer, Anna Seekamp drove him out to us from New York! He was later adopted from us. His people Lark and John McIntosh and family have provided a wonderful and loving home for him and he has thrived. We love you guys!Today there is also justice. Bernie is upside down with happiness, his previous owner has been bro...ught to justice. Bernie never deserved his previous life. And thanks goes to The Humane Society United States and Animal Farm Foundation for helping the 200 dogs in this case! Thanks also goes to Christina Aquistapace for her loving and caring foster period that helped transition Bernie. Another person asked him if a pit bull's jaws locked. He answered
that they did not lock but their PSI had tested the strongest. The PSI test is
an unsubstantiated test that tested the bite pressure in dogs. The study sets up
articficial circumstances. It doesn't include whether the dog is scared,
agitated etc. I'm assuming that the bite pressure in any test can change from
dog to dog or circumstance to circumstance. This study included a Rottweiler,
German Shepherd, & an American Pit Bull Terrier. In the test the American
Pit Bull Terrier had the weakest bite pressure out of the 3 breeds.
The advocate quoted the study incorrectly first of all, in so many
words indicating that the American Pit Bull Terrier had the strongest bite
pressure. Then he mentionied that it's proven that they're stronger and they
just "don't let go". Huh? Who are "they"? My dogs are pit bull dogs, I don't see
this. I don't see it in many of my clients' dogs. It doesn't mean that some of
our dogs aren't strong but some are weaker than others as well.
We need to look at what OUR dogs are doing, what we actually observe. A
dog's reaction to things in the environment is going to vary from DOG to DOG.
It's an individual thing. A dog "not letting go", as the advocate said, has to
do with behavior, individual behavior, not bite pressure as a constant.

Bite inhibition is the most important point here. This is where a dog
will lower his bite pressure so as not to cause harm. Again, this is a behavior
thing to lower bite pressure. Bascially bite pressure is meanlingless without
the concept of behavior and what sets an individual dog up for a behavior or any
problem behavior.

Please, even advocates need to stop promoting our dogs as some singled out
type, group or profile. It's very damaging, and many things seen in studies may
or may not be true for individual dogs. It does defame our dogs and they deserve
to be judged on their own merit, not a study, not what a famous person said and
so forth. We need to listen to what THAT ONE dog says he is.

Study link: http://dogfacts.wordpress.com/2008/02/03/national-geographics-dr-brady-barrs-bite-pressure-tests/

Our Packhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15866351499622774333noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337563478508563426.post-33938947183813912042012-01-07T20:54:00.001-08:002012-01-07T20:56:12.775-08:00Fabulous article on a pit bull and his chi buddy...
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45899910/ns/today-today_pets_and_animals/t/abandoned-pit-bulls-best-pal-chihuahua/Our Packhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15866351499622774333noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337563478508563426.post-57578855925052216212011-12-19T21:12:00.000-08:002011-12-19T21:15:53.568-08:00We lost a beautiful soul....<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wePfGFEgyAk/TvAZ_Exqa4I/AAAAAAAAALo/4eNvm7qBq0Q/s320/Leo%2Band%2BFriends.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688074900773432194" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vm6RwN0IQbA/TvAZ--0l8RI/AAAAAAAAALY/NHhlzCnYGrY/s320/leoschool2%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688074899175108882" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9IQ_lzKSWm8/TvAZ-czQO0I/AAAAAAAAALQ/hbvXehQ83nc/s320/leoschool2%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688074890042686274" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k7Gt8L-09So/TvAZ97uFeYI/AAAAAAAAALA/aFMEM_eqKLc/s320/LEO%2Band%2BME.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688074881162639746" />
It is with great sadness I must announce the loss of a wonderful soul. This week Leo passed away from a severe seizure disorder. Leo was my working partner, friend and family loved one and I will never forget how wonderful he was. He was so many things to many people and to many dogs.
Leo came to Our Pack from the Vick case and I was lucky enough to later adopt him. Even though he didn't have a good start in life he made life for others around him better. Just after arriving to us, Leo quickly turned inhumanity into humanity. He gave love that wasn't even given to him.
He worked with cancer patients as a therapy dog. He showed kids that no matter what you can still show love and compassion toward others regardless of how life has treated you. He showed the world that one should not be judged based on what property he lives on but on who you are and what you do as an individual. Many dogs are alive today and many people have smiled because of Leo and his work. He gave a second chance to other dogs that may never have gotten one because of who he was and what he did.
Please join me in remembering the good that Leo has done and pass it on.
Growing up with animals I can't imagine my life without them. My parents came from a time when we depended on animals, worked along side them everyday. I grew up mostly where I live now and it was mostly a farming community. Now it seems that insurance companies and landlords are making it so difficult to provide homes these days for dogs of many different breeds. We get the calls and e mails daily. Education is key I think in keeping our dogs in our homes and in providing information to those who rent out homes/apts and make decisions for insurance companies. Pass out handouts (www.ourpack.org) or from your local favorite rescue at www.pbrc.net and take your dog out, show him off, get his CGC www.akc.org/cgc Show the world that it's not the breed of dog, it's the teamwork between dog and owner. If we take responsibility, our dogs won't have to.

Yesterday we met up again with some great kids and brought Bernie from the 200 dog bust in OH last year. Bernie of course stole the show again as always and was a hit! We talked about ...spay/neuter, chaining dogs, what happens when dogs are left in yards and not socialized, how to care for dogs, abuse of dogfighting, etc. We talked about how dogs do great when they're revered as family members. We got the point across that the animal problems we see today are a human responsibilty. These kids were awesome! They had great questions, smart, smart answers and they were wonderful to work with! We loved them! We'd like to thank their wonderful teachers for bringing the kids, you guys are the best! We'd also like to thank Oakland Animal Services for letting us do our class there. Thanks to their ACO for the great tour and wonderful info given to the kids. She did an awesome job. Thank you Stephanie as always for giving the best talks. Anna thanks for bringing our lovely Bernie and your great input. And of course, thanks most of all to our sweet Bernie for the wisdom and love he passes on that makes the best points of all.Our Packhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15866351499622774333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337563478508563426.post-27116042439344502722011-02-07T08:05:00.001-08:002011-02-07T08:31:03.288-08:00Thank You Dogtime!

Dogtime was kind enough to write a nice blog about Our Pack. The pups were happy to see us this week with wagging tails and smiling faces. The pups seem to like this Pass the Pup thing too! Dr. Dexter also got to work some of his magic with the little ones. We leave our shoes outside the door, put down a clean blanket, wash our hand...s (they're still getting their shots) and just love them up. We're sure to pass them around, touch them everywhere and talk to them. As we mentioned in a couple of posts back the pups came in at 10 days old and lost their parents. So we decided to get some folks together once a week to socialize them and set them up for success.
Thanks to all who are helping with this. Thanks to the fosters for bringing them to the shelter for social time. We'll post if we need more people after the 1st. The thing I like to focus on the most regarding this subject are his former dogs. We also stay focused on dogs that are still victims of cruelty in similar cases. Today it's been 3 years since we took Leo into Our Pack as a rescue. Later I officially adopted him. Happy free day Leo! You've brought the best to us and taught us so very much so we could help others! Look how peaceful, confident and wise he looks in the pic. I love my Leo. <3Our Packhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15866351499622774333noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337563478508563426.post-5112722028800040242010-12-10T11:23:00.000-08:002010-12-10T11:29:16.477-08:00Our Pack Year in Review<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kzzDlHVXCOU/TQJ_gk2T-uI/AAAAAAAAAGI/rhguwEh9ROM/s320/OAS%2Band%2BBernie%2B006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549137888497892066" />
Our Pack's year in review. See what we've been up to including our story of Bernie, a victim of cruelty that's teaching kids about humane treatment of animals. We'd like to include here a HUGE thanks to Animal Farm Foundation for their great support and help in getting Bernie to us! Thanks for seeing the therapy dog in... Bernie and your continued tireless help for the dogs!! We love you. See their site at http://www.animalfarmfoundation.org
Here's our newsletter with an amendment below that was missing:
http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=jzch8rcab&v=001Q54IKSLlf4FHwLaJ6XneQAivulbHroestWq4Zsn2MqfzW7fDfi5kpoGDkfuaXB7lLK7PsUor5rpjz63RT_951ElMMQJSdh8cXcES7IVB7MG8o_0hzdCEoCz0L5WDewaBUx6KNo7HEQSxa5uADDopz8dRTlbXHKT1

Amendment:
Rescue is not our only function. Our main focus through Our Pack is to try and help create a community where rescue won’t be necessary in the future. Through our 2 prong program including 2 days/week of socializing and 1 day/week of focus training for the public as well as adopters through Our Pack we’ve been very successful at helping people continue to keep their dogs by teaching them leadership skills, management, training and socialization. We not only rescue dogs but also provide education and guidance for the community . It’s an ongoing 24/7 job that we all absolutely love. Changes in community awareness and responsible ownership is what we are trying to achieve so that our dogs no longer have to suffer, be abandoned, abused, fought and most of all, profiled. Thanks to all the generous people who donated to Our Pack this year and helped us not just rescue but make better lives for our dogs. Your continued donations to Our Pack help us achieve these goals. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization so your donations are tax deductable. We truly appreciate your continued support and help…so do the dogs! Our Packhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15866351499622774333noreply@blogger.com0
